Irish Film London Voluntary Board Director Position - Communications

Position Summary

Irish Film London is a not-for-profit organisation that champions Irish film and animation in the UK with three annual festivals and a year-round screening programme.  As we approach our 10th Anniversary, we are seeking expressions of interest from individuals who can bring marketing and communications expertise to our board and who can contribute to our overall strategic objectives.

IFL is a private company limited by guarantee without share capital.

IFL is now approaching our tenth anniversary of running the annual Irish Film Festival in London. The festival is launched each year at the Irish Film London Awards ceremony, which is organised by IFL and hosted by the Irish Embassy in London. We also run events throughout the year, including the film section of the St. Patrick's Day Festival with the Mayor of London and the film section of the St Brigid’s Festival with the Irish Embassy.

Through Premiere screenings, Director Q&A sessions, related workshops, exhibitions and performances, the organisation brings together industry professionals, film fans and fans of Irish Arts & Culture alike. Focusing on Irish productions, scripts and casts, we provide an outstanding platform for Irish Film in London and we promote the best of Irish creative talent in the UK.

We have a long track record of receiving support from Screen Ireland, Culture Ireland, Ireland Funds of Great Britain, the Arts Council of Ireland, IFI International, the Emigrant Support Programme, the Irish Youth Foundation and Film London.

Over the next five year, we will be expanding the development of our programmes to more UK cities with strong Irish populations and creating even more professional opportunities for Irish film makers and talent in the UK. 

Board Membership at IFL

The purpose of the IFL board is to determine our strategic objectives and policies, monitor progress towards those objectives and account for the company’s activities to our stakeholders.

The position is unpaid but otherwise rewarding in that the board is instrumental in insuring that IFL showcases actors, directors, producers, writers and crew who are passionate about having their works presented to a UK audience. 

The board meets monthly in the centre of London. Each board member brings expertise and experience that in aggregate delivers a successful programme of film and animation presentations each year. 

The time commitment required to fulfil the duties of this role is the equivalent of 2-3 days per month.

Responsibilities as Director (Communications)

  • Developing and driving our marketing and communications strategy

  • Leading on PR activities in preparation for and during our events and annual festivals

  • Providing input on sponsorship packages, press releases and marketing campaigns

  • Deepening our insight into the needs of film audiences, arts and community organisations and corporate sponsors

  • Acting as spokesperson for IFL, as necessary

  • The time commitment required to fulfil the duties of this role is the equivalent of 2-3 days per month

Responsibilities as IFL Board Member

  • Participating in board meetings and events

  • Presenting short reports/documentation

  • Leading on the communications and PR aspects of the overall strategy of Irish Film London  

  • Ensuring we hold ourselves to the highest standards of governance

  • Being an active ambassador for IFL in engagements with funders, sponsors, members, film makers, cinemas and audiences

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will have a range of experience relevant to the position. Listed below are some of the areas which would set the successful candidate apart:

  • Career experience in marketing and/or communications roles (required)

  • Excellent writing skills

  • Relevant media connections

  • Ability to strategise on audience development

  • Ability to drive marketing campaigns

  • Understanding of the marketing and communications needs associated with corporate sponsorship partnerships

  • Connections with business or philanthropic networks and organisations

  • Experience dealing with special guests and VIPs
